Saint Maries is the county seat of Benewah County, Idaho with a population of about 3,000 people. Saint Maries is a pretty town, and there are plenty of things to do here, such as: visiting local shops, restaurants, galleries, and nine-hole golf course. Saint Maries is also proud of its modern Benewah Community Hospital, an active senior center, and many summer activities. A popular event, Paul Bunyan Days, falls during the Labor Day Weekend and celebrates the town's lumber mill roots.​

Some favorite local pass-times include fly-fishing for cutthroat trout, white-water rafting on the St. Joe River, or mountain biking on the Hiawatha Trail. Other activities involve hiking or bird-watching in the Heyburn State Park, hunting for Elk, or picking huckleberries. Because Saint Maries is located in the Bitter Root Mountains, ski areas and snowmobiling opportunities are plentiful.

 

There are many interesting sites in the surrounding area. To collect valuable gems, make a 30-mile road trip to hunt for the rare Star Garnet near Clarkia, ID. Also, enjoy attractive and engaging towns in the area, such as Wallace, Kellogg, Harrison, or the historic Old Mission State Park in Cataldo, Idaho.
